Man Dies In West Side House Fire

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A man was killed in a fire at his West Garfield Park neighborhood home Wednesday morning.

Delmar Dillard, 57, was killed in the fire at his home in the 4100 block of West Gladys Avenue, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

The fire started in the one-and–a-half story home about 4 a.m., according to Fire Media Affairs.

He was taken to Mount Sinai Medical Center in critical condition after he was found in the basement of the building. He went into cardiac arrest and died about half an hour later from injuries suffered in the blaze, authorities said.

The man suffered severe smoke inhalation and there were no working smoke detectors in the building, fire officials said.

A firefighter who was injured in the blaze was taken to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park in good condition, according to fire media.

The fire also displaced two other residents.
