Indians Closer Perez Charged With Pot Possession

CLEVELAND (AP) — Police say Cleveland Indians closer Chris Perez told drug agents he had pot in his home for personal use and pointed out two jars.

The details were disclosed in reports released Friday by police in the Cleveland suburb of Rocky River.

The reports say police were tipped off to suspicious packages by postal inspectors. They say police arranged a delivery Tuesday under surveillance and that wife Melanie Perez accepted two packages.

The reports say a later house search under warrant began while Perez and his wife were out for lunch and a movie. A baby-sitter was caring for two children.

Police say Perez returned home and mentioned personal marijuana use.

Perez and his wife were charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession in complaints filed Friday. Defense attorney Terry Gilbert says the two will plead not guilty and expect a favorable outcome.
