Suspect Being Questioned In Shooting Of 9-Year-Old Boy

CHICAGO (STMW) -- Police on Saturday were questioning a suspect in the shooting this week of a 9-year-old boy on the South Side, a source said.

The boy was shot in the chest about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 6700 block of South Evans Avenue. His uncle said the boy was 9 years old.

The boy was taken in critical condition to the University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital, police said.

The suspect was in custody on Saturday and detectives were talking to the suspect, a law enforcement source said.

As family members left the hospital on Wednesday, the boy's mother responded to questions by reporters about the boy's condition, saying, "He's fine."

A fire department spokesman said paramedics did not take the boy to the hospital. Authorities said the boy's parents may have driven him there for treatment.
