GENEVA, Ill. (STMW) — A 21-year-old man was taken to the hospital Monday after he was found locked in the restroom of a Geneva Starbucks, surrounded by packets of suspected heroin and a hypodermic needle.
A concerned citizen flagged down an officer outside the coffee shop on State Street at 8:20 a.m. to report a man had been in the bathroom for an extended amount of time, police said. The officer was able to open the door, and found the man inside.
Police would not say whether the victim was unconscious at the time, but did say he was taken to an area hospital for treatment.
When the officer entered the bathroom, he found a cellophane wrapper, and several tinfoil packets containing heroin on the back of the toilet seat. A needle was found on the bathroom floor. The officer tended to the victim, and then noticed that the cellophane and tinfoil packets were suddenly missing, police said.
An anonymous caller to the police station’s front desk told officers to check out the victim’s alleged companion for the missing evidence.
Police asked Tyler White, 21, 300 block of North First Street, Geneva, to take off his shoes. When he did, police located a hypodermic needle, two cotton swabs, and a spoon. Police said they asked White to remove his socks, and that is where they found the missing packets of heroin, police said.
White was charged with felony possession of a controlled substance, felony obstruction of justice/destroying evidence, possession of a hypodermic needle, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Police said the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
According to court records, White is currently out on bail for an unrelated drug arrest that took place in April. White faces charges of felony possession of a controlled substance for being in possession of between 15 and 200 Ecstasy pills, and manufacturing/delivering a controlled substance, a Class X felony.
