CHICAGO (CBS) — An officer-involved shooting has left one man dead — shot by Chicago police early this morning after an attempted traffic stop on the West Side.
It happened around 2:30 a.m. as police tried to pull over a car for a traffic violation near 17th and Springfield in North Lawndale neighborhood.
Pat Camden of the Fraternal Order of Police says the driver stopped the car and ran with a gun clearly visible on his waist.
“They continue to chase him. He is now reaching for the weapon. At that point, the officers, in fear of their lives, fire shots at the offender. He is struck, he is DOA at the scene,” said Camden.
Police recovered a 9 mm handgun.
