Kane County To Bury Cremated Remains Of 40 Unclaimed People Tomorrow

(CBS) — The cremated remains of 40 people with no known family will be buried tomorrow in Kane County, reports WBBM’s Brandis Friedman.

Kane County Coroner Rob Russell says he needed the public and the media’s help to locate families for the 47 unclaimed remains found in his office storage unit just months after he took office.

“Even for a coroner’s office it is kind of weird,” said Russell. “This represents a range of people that had lives.”

Only seven families were located, more than Russell expected. Among the 40 cremains to be buried at St. Charles Township North Cemetery was someone who died in 1952.

“It just fueled me more to do something about this and to get a final resting place for all the people that were there,” said Russell.

Russell says his office now has procedures in place to keep this from happening again.
