CHICAGO (CBS) -- A trio of daredevils broke onto the roof of the Trump Tower overnight and jumped off using parachutes.

Police said the three people used a cutting device to gain access to the roof of the skyscraper at 401 N. Wabash Av. around 12:30 a.m.

Once they got onto the roof, they jumped off wearing parachutes, and safely floated to the ground. The skyscraper is Chicago's second tallest building, and it is 1,170 feet tall at the roof.

Three Parachute Off Trump Tower

Police did not find out about it until a couple hours later, and the three base jumpers were long gone when officers arrived at the scene. If the three jumpers are caught, they would face trespassing charges.

WBBM Newsradio's Bernie Tafoya hasn't found any eyewitnesses to the stunt, but passerby Antonio Nichols said, "they probably stole something, broke into somebody's place at the Trump, and made an escape plan on some movie-type stuff."

Elevator maintenance workers Mike Galizia and John Califf said they don't think they'd be brave enough to go base jumping off a skyscraper. They prefer the security of an elevator.

"A lot safer inside," Califf said. "I wouldn't parachute out of anything."

Trump Tower officials declined comment.

In July 2010, three people also parachuted from the top of the Trump Tower, but that was a stunt for the movie Transformers 3.
