WESTCHESTER, Ill. (CBS) – A couple from the west suburbs had a really big week last week: they celebrated a birthday, their wedding day, and $500,000 in Lottery winnings.

WBBM Newsradio’s Mike Krauser reports Louis Gardner bought the winning ticket at the BP gas station in Westchester.

That’s where he went to pick up his over-sized check on Friday. He said he bought the ticket because his fiancée told him to.

“The day that it happened was on her birthday, June 13th,” he said.

He found out he won after taking flowers to his dad’s grave on Father’s Day.

They got married four days later.

Gardner said he hasn’t always done what his wife told him to do, but he will now.

“Oh yes,” he said.

Gardner said he’s not going on a huge spending spree anytime soon.

“This is going to be squeezed real tight, believe me,” he said.
