Van Filled With Blackhawks Fans Hits Tree, Flips On Its Side

WESTERN SPRINGS, Ill. (STMW) -- A day of celebration came to an abrupt halt early Friday when a van full of Blackhawks fans hit a tree and rolled onto its side near in Western Springs.

Witness Hilary Remijas of Western Springs was walking her dog near the intersection of Clausen and Burlington avenues just before 9 a.m. when she heard a squeal. She looked up to see the dark-colored van hit a tree and flip onto its side, Pioneer Press is reporting.

"The three people inside ran away," said Remijas, who described the occupants of the van as young men, in their teens or 20s, all dressed in Blackhawks gear.

One of the young men, later identified as the driver, returned moments later, on foot with his mother. He was questioned by Western Springs police and taken away in handcuffs.

Police would not comment on possible charges against the driver.

No one appeared to be seriously hurt.

The crash, which occurred just blocks from the Western Springs Metra station, happened as thousands of Blackhawks fans crowded trains for the celebration in Grant Park.
