$500K Bond For Man Charged With Attempted Robbery Of Oak Brook Jewelry Store

WHEATON, Ill. (AP) — Bond was set Saturday at $500,000 for a Detroit man charged in the attempted jewelry store robbery last Sunday at Oakbrook Center.

At approximately 3:45 p.m. on Sunday, June 23, 25-year-old Levert Jones and two accomplices allegedly entered the C.D. Peacock store at the mall, a release from the DuPage County State's Attorney's office said. Shortly afterward, it's alleged, Jones pulled a dark object, later determined to be a sledgehammer, from his waistband and began smashing a glass merchandise case containing watches and jewelry.

An armed, in-store security guard pulled out his weapon and ordered Jones to stop what he was doing and lie on the ground. After initially complying with the security guard's orders, Jones allegedly tried to escape when the security guard attempted to handcuff him. After a brief struggle, the security guard discharged his weapon, striking Jones in the abdomen. Oak Brook police officers arrived at the scene a short time afterward and Jones was taken to a Good Samaritan Hospital.

After the attempted robbery, Jones' accomplices allegedly left the store on foot and then left the mall in a vehicle that had previously been stolen from the mall parking lot, the state's attorney's office said. The suspects are described as black men in their late 20s or early 30s. One man is about 5 feet, 9 inches tall, about 230 pounds with a tattoo on the right side of his neck and wearing a black T-shirt. The other man is about 5 feet, 9 inches tall and about 160 pounds with a heavy beard. He was wearing a white T-shirt.

Jones was charged with one count of attempted armed robbery, a Class 1 felony. At a hearing at the DuPage County Courthouse on Saturday, Judge Robert Douglas set bond at $500,000 for Jones, the release said.

His next court appearance is scheduled for July 22 for arraignment in front of Judge Blanche Hill Fawell. As a condition of bond, should Jones post, he will be required to wear a GPS monitoring device.

Police recovered a black sport utility vehicle stolen by the other two men who fled the jewelry store. The vehicle was abandoned in an Oakbrook Terrace strip mall. Oak Brook police have obtained surveillance photos from the store of the other two suspects and are working to enhance the quality of the images.

The investigation is continuing and police ask that anyone with information regarding the incident contact the Oak Brook Police Department at (630) 368-8760 or the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office at (630) 407-8000.
