Cubs Dump Marmol, Acquire Guerrier From Dodgers

(CBS) Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer finally managed to rid themselves of Carlos Marmol and his hefty contract, but had to give up an international signing bonus slot to get it done.

The Los Angeles Dodgers agreed to take Marmol in exchange for 34-year-old reliever Matt Guerrier, but also acquired international signing bonus slot number four from the Cubs.

Like Marmol, Guerrier was designated for assignment recently. He was just 2-3 with three holds and a 4.80 ERA in 34 relief outings with the Dodgers this season before being designated for assignment on Sunday.

The trade was one of three made today by the Cubs. They also acquired right-handed pitchers Jake Arrieta and Pedro Strop as well as two international signing bonus slots (slot numbers three and four) from the Baltimore Orioles for right-handed pitcher Scott Feldman and catcher Steve Clevenger. In addition, they acquired two more international signing bonus slots (slot numbers two and three) from the Houston Astros for minor league infielder Ronald Torreyes.
