Slain Honor Student Wanted To Become Police Officer
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Teenager Ed Cooper was gunned down in broad daylight while playing basketball Monday. Police say the teen had no gang ties or criminal background.
His mother says, his only dream, was to become a Chicago Police officer. CBS 2's Suzanne Le Mignot spoke to Cooper's family.
Cooper attended Orr High School and was just 15-years-old.
"He was a child, a straight A student. Didn't do no wrong," said Charlotte Wordlaw, the victim's mother. "A good kid. That's why it's hard to believe. It's hard to believe that he's gone."
Cooper was gunned down near a basketball court in the West Garfield Park neighborhood. His mother says her son often waited for the shooting to stop before playing.
"He'd come outside when he'd feel it was all over and for me to come and find my son on the ground like that, it's sad," said Wordlaw. "You see, when he do come outside, they take his life. An innocent child."
The shooting, happened just after 5 in the afternoon. A man parked a car near the court, got out and just opened fire. There were numerous witnesses. Cooper's mother hopes they have the courage to work with police and find the shooter.
"Love your kids, because I'm truly going to miss mine. Whoever did it, they need to come forward," said Wordlaw.
So far police do not have anyone in custody. Cooper would have turned 16 on July 22. His mother just bought a car because Cooper had gotten his learner's permit and was looking forward to getting his license.
