Baby Stillborn After Mother Beaten In Back Of The Yards

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A pregnant woman lost her baby after a group of people beat her Monday night on a sidewalk in the Back of the Yards neighborhood.

The woman, 25, was walking in the 4800 block of South Laflin Street about 11 p.m. when a group of males and females approached her and exchanged words, police said.

The group punched the woman and knocked her to the ground, before continuing the beating, landing blows to her arms and stomach, police said.

The woman was at least 7 1/2 months pregnant at the time of the assault, a spokesman for the Cook County Medical Examiner's office said.

She was treated at Mount Sinai Hospital, where the baby girl was born stillborn Tuesday afternoon, the medical examiner's office said.

The woman's home address is listed in the 4700 block of South Paulina Street, the medical examiner's office said -- roughly four blocks away from the site of the attack.

An autopsy Wednesday determined the baby died in the womb as a result of the attack, the medical examiner's office said.

No one was in custody Wednesday night for the beating, which may be gang-related, police said.
