Davis, Rush To Host Summit On Gun Violence In Chicago

(CBS) -- Congressmen Danny Davis and Bobby Rush have teamed up to plan what they're calling an "emergency summit on urban violence" in Chicago later this month.

WBBM Newsradio's John Waelti reports the congressmen announced the two-day summit would be held at Chicago State University on July 25 and 26. They plan to invite local, state, and federal officials to attend.

At a news conference in Washington, they said the summit is badly needed, amid escalating gun violence nationwide.

Rush said the problem is most acute in Chicago, citing 188 the murders in the city through the end of June.

"We've seen coverage of the disruptions in Cairo, but they pale in comparison to the carnage in Chicago," Rush said, referring to violent clashes in Egypt, between opponents and supports of ousted Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi.

Organizers of the summit said it will address the causes of gun violence, and demand solutions, including jobs for Chicago youths.
