Shootings Kill 5, Injure 16 Over Weekend
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Five people were killed and at least 16 other people -- including four teenagers and a 72-year-old woman -- were wounded in shootings across the city since Friday night.
The most recent fatal shooting occurred late Sunday in the Lawndale neighborhood, when 35-year-old Ernest J. Carter and a woman were sitting in a car parked in the 4000 block of West Cullerton Street, authorities said.
About 11 p.m., two gunmen approached the pair on foot, opening fire into the car from behind, police said.
Both were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital with gunshot wounds to the back. Carter, of the 4000 block of West 21st Street, was struck multiple times and died at Mount Sinai Hospital at 11:45 p.m., the medical examiner's office said. The woman, 37, was in serious condition, police said.
Earlier Sunday afternoon a man was found dead from a gunshot wound to the head in the 1600 block of West Jonquil Terrace in the Rogers Park neighborhood, police said. The body of 22-year-old Blake Lamb was found about 3:45 p.m.
Lamb, of the 7600 block of North Bosworth Avenue, had been shot multiple times.
About an hour earlier on the South Side, a teen boy died after he was shot in the back in the South Deering neighborhood about 2:50 p.m., police said.
Sixteen-year-old Joseph Brewer Jr. was near home when he was shot in the 10500 block of South Oglesby Avenue, authorities said.
Brewer, of the 10600 block of South Oglesby Avenue, was taken in critical condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where he died, authorities said.
On Saturday, 25-year-old Fernando Sanchez was fatally shot near Le Moyne Street and Ridgeway Avenue in Humboldt Park about 1:50 a.m., authorities said. Sanchez, of the 3100 block of West Le Moyne Street, was standing on the sidewalk when a shooter approached from an alley and opened fire, police said.
Sanchez was shot in the abdomen and taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, where he died at 3:36 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
The shooting appeared to be gang-related, police said.
About 10:30 p.m. Friday, 25-year-old Jeremy Morris was shot to death in the South Shore neighborhood.
Morris was found with multiple gunshot wounds to the body in the 6800 block of South Paxton Avenue, authorities said.
Two shooters approached the vehicle and shot Morris, of the 5000 block of South Champlain Avenue, before fleeing in a dark-colored vehicle, police said.
Morris was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:50 p.m., according to the medical examiner's office.
At least 16 other people ranging in age from 14 to 72 have been hurt in separate shootings across the city since late Friday, authorities said.
The most recent non-fatal shooting happened early Monday, when a 46-year-old man was wounded in a drive-by shooting while he sat in a parked car about 3:57 a.m. in the Englewood neighborhood, police said.
While the man sat in a the car in the 400 block of West 60th Street, gunfire erupted from a passing vehicle, striking him in the hip and elbow, police said. The man is listed in "stable" condition.
A couple of hours earlier, also in the Englewood neighborhood, a man found his own ride to Saint Bernard Hospital after he was shot in the face, police said.
The 27-year-old provided investigators with few details, but recounted that he was outside in the 5600 block of South Shields Avenue about 1 a.m. when he heard gunfire and then realized he was shot, police said.
A 60-year-old bystander was hurt when someone started shooting early Sunday in the Back of the Yards neighborhood.
The woman was in the 4500 block of South Wood Street about 4:55 a.m. when she was shot in the chin, police said. She did not appear to be the intended target of the shooting, police said. She was taken to Stroger Hospital in "stable" condition.
On Saturday, two teen boys, ages 14 and 15, were shot in West Englewood.
They were standing outside near West 59th and South Justine streets about 11:55 p.m. when an unidentified male entered the gangway and opened fire, police said.
One boy, 14, was shot in the lower left leg while the 15-year-old boy was shot in the right thigh, police said. Both were taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition.
A 72-year-old woman was shot in the arm about 8:15 p.m. Saturday near 62nd and Richmond streets in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood on the Southwest Side, police said.
She was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in "stable" condition, police said. Authorities had no details on the circumstances surrounding the attack.
