CHICAGO (STMW) – Police have released two people of interest who were questioned in connection with the shooting of a woman and a 6-year-old girl on the Far South Side.
Police announced Sunday afternoon that the two people being questioned were release and no one is in custody.
The child’s family pleaded Saturday for others with knowledge of the crime to come forward, the Sun-Times is reporting.
Quianna Tompkins’ mother didn’t know a person was in custody for Friday night’s incident.
But as she stood outside Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn where Quianna was listed in critical condition, Juannakee Kennedy made an emotional plea to those responsible for the violence.
“I am begging whoever knows anything about this incident please, I know you didn’t mean to do it on purpose but please don’t go through life with this guilt on your heart. We forgive you. We just want some justice for our baby. She is fighting for her life,” Kennedy said, flanked by relatives and the Rev. Corey Brooks.
Quianna and a family friend were on the sidewalk about 7:40 p.m. Friday in the 300 block of West 105th Street, when two males nearby started shooting at each other, according to police and fire officials.
Kennedy and her husband who live in the South Shore neighborhood said their daughter, the valedictorian of her kindergarten class, was visiting Roseland and playing when a bullet pierced her chest.
The woman who was injured with Quianna suffered a gunshot wound to the right thigh and was in “stable” condition at Christ Medical Center.
Kennedy on Saturday lit up when talking about Quianna. She called her daughter an “artist.”
“She has so much potential. She has so much to give,” said Kennedy. “She just needs to have a chance.”
Kenneth Tompkins, Quianna’s father, added, “My child she loves life. For somebody to attempt to rob her of it is just ridiculous Something has to be done about it before somebody else’s child is out playing and gets shot for no reason at all other than being outside playing in the summertime.”
No charges had been filed Sunday.
