Massachusetts Governor Pays Up On Bet With Governor Quinn

CHICAGO (CBS) — It was pay up time at the Greater Chicago Food Depository as Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick returned to his hometown to settle his wager with Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn.

“The best sport in America is with us today,” said Quinn.

Patrick joined Governor Quinn in packing pears on the assembly line part of their Stanley Cup wager.

“We had a friendly wager and I can’t think of a better way to honor the spirit of these two teams and the spirit of the game than to volunteer,” said Governor Patrick.

“If the Bruins had won I would have been at the Greater Boston Food Bank but thank you for 17 seconds, those 17 seconds, magical seconds.”

Quinn says he chose a volunteering bet because it sets an example for the community.

“Anybody would love lobster or clam chowder from Massachusetts but I think it’s an educational opportunity to teach everybody how important food banks are to everyday people.”

Quinn says he’s been on the losing end of sports bets in the past.

“The Bears lost to the Packers and I had to go up to Kenosha but I had to wear a Packers jersey. That wasn’t easy but I paid that bet.”

Patrick says he’s sad the Bruins lost to the Hawks but he’s happy to be a good sport however, there was one thing he says he wouldn’t do.

“The one condition I wouldn’t do, was wearing the jersey because there are complications at home for that kind of thing,” he laughed.

Patrick grew up in Chicago. Governor Quinn honored Patrick’s South Side roots by renaming part of Wabash Avenue “Honorary Governor Deval Patrick Avenue”.

No word yet on when Boston Mayor Tom Manino may pay up on what he owes Mayor Emanuel.

The Greater Chicago Food Depository distributes about 150,000 meals every day to needy families.
