CHICAGO (CBS) -- Nathan Woessner, the 6-year-old boy who survived being buried in an Indiana sand dune, was discharged from the University of Chicago Medicine Comer Children's Hospital late Tuesday afternoon.

He will continue to receive rehabilitative therapy elsewhere for several days, the hospital said in a statement.

Nathan's parents have asked for privacy as they focus on helping their child recover.

Nathan was transported to the University of Chicago on July 13 with critical injuries to the lungs sustained from inhaling sand.

He had been buried in up to 11 feet of sand, after falling into a hole on Mt. Baldy at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore in Michigan City, Ind.

He survived for more than three hours in an air pocket under the sand.

Nathan continued to improve daily, and doctors have determined that Nathan did not suffer any brain or neurological damage.
