Man Charged With Killing Woman, 5-Year-Old Boy In June

CHICAGO (CBS) -- An 18-year-old man has been charged with two counts of murder, accused of killing a woman and her 5-year-old son in their Back of the Yards home in June.

Chavonne Brown, 31, and Sterling Sims, 5, were shot and killed in their two-flat in the 5300 block of South Winchester Avenue on June 28.

Antonio Lewis, of the 5500 block of South Winchester Avenue, was shot himself the night of the murders, and has been hospitalized ever since.

He allegedly entered Brown's home around 2:40 a.m. on June 28, and shot her and Sterling, then tried to shoot Sterling's 11-year-old brother, but his gun malfunctioned, police said.

That boy called 911.

That night, someone shot Lewis in the groin, back, and neck, while he was standing in the 2800 block of West Arthington Street. Police have not said if that shooting was an act of retaliation.

Lewis has been hospitalized ever since, and early Friday, police announced he had been charged with two counts of first-degree murder, and one count of attempted first-degree murder. He will not appear in bond court, because of his injuries.
