Skydiver Killed In Accident In LaSalle County

CHICAGO (CBS) -- An Elgin woman died during a skydiving attempt on Thursday in LaSalle County, authorities said.

The county sheriff said Friday that 32-year-old Stephanie Eggum died Thursday afternoon.

Authorities believe Eggum had cut away her main parachute and deployed the backup chute too late to allow it to fully deploy.

Officers located Eggum in a cornfield.

She was pronounced dead at the scene in Dayton Township, outside of Ottawa.

On her Facebook page, Eggum mentioned that she was going to be part of a group attempting to set the women's world record for a vertical skydive in Arizona in November.

The group is aiming to create the largest formation of women in the "head down rotation," which means diving head first as opposed to diving on their belly.
