Four Dead, 33 Wounded In Weekend Violence

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Four men were killed and at least 33 other people --including a 4-year-old girl--wounded in gun violence across the city since Friday night.

Despite the violence, Chicago Police say citywide shootings are down 22 percent, murders are down 26 percent and overall crime is down 15 percent compared with last year. The murder rate has not been this low since 1965.

The city has had fewer shootings and fewer murders so far this month than in August 2012.

Late Sunday, the four-year-old girl and two other people were shot in the Portage Park neighborhood on the Northwest Side, authorities said.

They were driving down Central Avenue near West Irving Park Road just before 10:30 p.m. when someone in another vehicle saw them, pulled up alongside them and started shooting, police said.

The girl was shot in the hip and taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. The other two victims, a 17-year-old boy who was shot in the thigh and 20-year-old man shot in the arm and leg, were taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center. All were listed in serious-to-critical condition, authorities said.

The most recent fatal shooting happened Saturday night in the West Side Humboldt Park neighborhood, when two men were shot about 10:10 p.m. in the 1000 block of North St. Louis Avenue, police said.

Antonio Alves, 18, was shot multiple times and taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, where he was pronounced dead, police said. Another man, 24, was shot in the torso and taken in critical condition to Mount Sinai Hospital.

One man was killed and another wounded in a separate shooting Saturday night in the South Side Bronzeville neighborhood.

The shooting happened about 6:15 p.m. in the 2900 block of South State Street, police said.

Ralph McNeal, 54, was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, where he died at 7:10 p.m., according to the medical examiner's office.

Another man, 26, was also taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition.

Early Saturday, another man was killed in the South Chicago neighborhood.

Jacoby Herron, 21, was outside with other people about 4 a.m. in the 2400 block of East 79th Street when someone started shooting, authorities said.

Herron, of the 7900 block of South Oglesby Avenue, was shot multiple times and was dead on the scene, authorities said.

The weekend's first fatal shooting happened late Friday in the Woodlawn neighborhood.

Kenneth Barbour, 18, was shot while arguing with another male about 8:10 p.m. in the 500 block of East 68th Street, authorities said.

Barbour, of the 1600 block of East 85th Street, died at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County at 11:32 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

Twenty-eight other people have been shot throughout the city since Friday night.

No one is in custody for any of the attacks as area detectives investigate.
