Crime Commission Produces 1st Of Anti-Heroin Ads

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Illinois law enforcement officials are producing informational videos to combat what they say is an "epidemic" of heroin use.

The Illinois State Crime Commission and the Police Athletic League of Illinois announced Wednesday the videos will be made available to police, educators and public health officials.

Crime Commission Executive Director Jerry Elsner says officials "must be prepared for the inevitable repercussions of the heroin epidemic."

Elsner says during one recent 17-day period, in DuPage County alone, there were 15 deaths caused by heroin overdose.

The first ad features teenagers playing ball in a park. One by one, they fall to the ground as an announcer asks: "When will we see this epidemic in plain view?"
