Man Charged With Stabbing Girlfriend In Joliet
JOLIET, Ill. (STMW) -- A Harvey man accused of attacking his girlfriend with a knife while she slept early Monday told police he heard voices telling him to kill her, prosecutors said.
Bond was set at $2 million for Antonio P. Lawrence, 23, of 15129 Turlington Ave., in Will County court Monday on charges of attempted murder and aggravated domestic battery.
Lawrence went to the Joliet police department shortly after the attack, shirtless, covered in blood and carrying a knife in his pocket with the blade pointed up, prosecutors said.
He told police, "I killed my baby momma," authorities said.
Lawrence allegedly attacked the 20-year-old woman with a butcher knife in the fifth-floor apartment they shared in the Evergreen Terrace housing units.
Prosecutors said Lawrence, the woman and their two toddlers were sleeping when they were awakened by a phone call.
Lawrence asked for cigarettes, the woman told authorities, and she said she didn't have any.
Then Lawrence asked where the knives were kept, the woman told police. He got a knife and began shaking with a crazy look in his eye, she told police.
Then he began stabbing her in the face, prosecutors said. She grabbed her son and stood on the bed while he stabbed her seven more times before running out, according to prosecutors.
At 1:20 a.m. the victim called police who arrived to find her lying on the floor in the hallway outside her apartment on the 300 block of North Broadway with "numerous" wounds to her face and body. She was hospitalized and is expected to survive, but could lose her arm, Joliet police Cmdr. Brian Benton said.
Lawrence is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 16.
