AURORA, Ill. (STMW) — Police are continuing their investigation into a traffic crash, in which a 9-year-old boy or girl was struck and injured by a police car during Friday night’s thunderstorms.
Paramedics took the unidentified child to Provena Mercy Hospital for treatment of what police said were “possible internal injuries.” The child’s condition was not known.
A police news release stated the crash occurred about 7 p.m. Friday as a squad car was driving north on Ohio Street and approaching Front Street “in a heavy thunderstorm.” The 9-year-old and an unidentified 7-year-old boy or girl at that point “ran eastbound across Ohio Street in front of the approaching squad,” the release read in part.
The car hit the older child, and the officer “immediately exited the squad and administered first aid,” according to the release. Neither the officer nor the younger child was hurt.
Police traffic investigators were sent to the scene, the release stated. “Initial investigation indicates that speed was not a factor” in the crash, and “no citations were issued,” the release read.
