Police Shoot Man Who Pointed Gun At Officers

CHICAGO (STMW) -- Chicago police shot a man after he repeatedly pointed a gun at officers on the South Side early Saturday.

Officers were patrolling in the 6300 block of South King Drive at 2:09 a.m., according to a police News Affairs statement.

Officers were in their vehicle on King Drive, just south of East 63rd Street, when they saw a 23-year-old man firing a handgun at another passing vehicle, said Pat Camden, a spokesman for the Fraternal Order of Police.

The officers got out of their vehicle and ordered the man to drop the gun, Camden said. He turned the gun on officers, who then fired at him. The man was not hit, and ran away on King Drive.

During a foot chase, the man turned his gun on the officers two more times before he was shot in the leg, Camden said.

After he was shot, he ran into a building in the 6200 block of South King Drive. He was later arrested and a 9 mm handgun was recovered, Camden said.

He was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County and "appears to be in good shape," Camden said.

There were no other injuries, according to the police statement.

Area South detectives and the Independent Police Review Authority are investigating the shooting.
