Male Shot, Seriously Hurt Along Safe Passage Route

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A person was seriously hurt in a shooting near an elementary school early Sunday in the West Garfield Park neighborhood.

The male, whose age is not yet known, was in a vehicle in the 3900 block of West Wilcox Street about 4:45 a.m. when someone on the street started shooting, police said.

He was shot multiple times in the chest and leg and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in serious condition, police said.

Genevieve Melody Elementary School is located on that same block. A Safe Passage route runs along that portion of Wilcox Street, according to Chicago Public Schools.

Melody is a welcoming school for students from Delano Elementary School, one of 47 CPS elementary schools closed earlier this year.

No one is in custody as Area North detectives investigate.
