Teen Struck And Killed By Freight Train In Gary

GARY, Ind. (STMW) -- An eastbound Norfolk Southern train struck and killed a 15-year-old boy in Gary shortly after 5 p.m. Wednesday, the Post-Tribune is reporting.

Witnesses said Diquan Thomas, of the 4300 block of Massachusetts Street in Gary, and a 17-year-old friend were walking north near the tracks and both tried to cross in front of the oncoming train. The older teen made it across successfully, but Thomas was hit by the train as it neared Delaware Street and he was thrown several feet.

Patrolmen Nicolas Deem and Jamal Martin were the first to arrive on the scene about 5:07 p.m.

Thomas, a freshman at Lew Wallace High School, was rushed to The Methodist Hospitals Northlake Campus in serious condition, police said. He was pronounced dead in the emergency room of blunt force trauma at 6:05 p.m.

The train was stopped near Georgia Street at 42nd Avenue while police processed the scene.

Railroad police were investigating.
