Autopsy Inconclusive For School Guard Who Died Breaking Up Fight

SOUTH HOLLAND, Ill. (CBS) -- Investigators were still trying to figure out why a suburban school security guard died Thursday while breaking up a fight.

Richard Cowser, 54, was trying to break up a fight between two girls at Thornwood High School in South Holland, when he collapsed and died.

CBS 2's Roseanne Tellez reports an autopsy on Friday was inconclusive. Police said, once a cause of death is determined, it will help determine whether the girls bear any responsibility.

Some former students visited Thornwood on Friday, after hearing the news about their favorite security guard.

"I looked on the news, they said he died. I'm like, 'Wow, that's crazy,' because we literally just seen him not too long ago," Williams said.

Williams said students called Cowser "Hulk Hogan," because of his resemblance to the pro wrestling star.

When Cowser and another security guard intervened in a fight between students at Thornwood High on Thursday afternoon, he collapsed and started turning blue, according to police.

Several students at the school said they don't blame the girls who were fighting, and called Cowser's death a terrible accident.

"It's not their fault. It's just the wrong thing happened at the wrong time," Carroll said.
