Report: Adrian Peterson's Son Allegedly Beaten By Mother's Boyfriend

Updated - 1:07 PM CT

(CBS) A son of Vikings running back Adrian Peterson is in critical condition after allegedly being beaten by a man his mother was dating.

The child reportedly sustained injuries that were consistent with abuse, Sioux Falls police spokesman Sam Clemens said.

Adrian Peterson's father, Nelson Peterson, told the Pioneer Press that the injured boy was indeed one of his grandsons.

"All I can say is, we are asking for prayers and for respect for our family as we deal with this tragic situation," Nelson Peterson said.

TMZ reports police have arrested 27-year-old Joseph Patterson in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Patterson has been charged with aggravated felony assault and battery of an infant.

The report from TMZ indicates emergency responders arrived at the scene at 5:46 PM on Wednesday evening and found the child unresponsive.

Peterson spoke to the media Friday afternoon and said he will play "without a doubt" on Sunday.

Peterson also said:  "I really appreciate all the support from fans and the Vikings. I ask y'all respect my privacy."
