Besides the 52 inmates on the jail bus, there was the driver and two guards.

And Sheriff's Department Spokesman Ben Breit says the driver had to pull over on the shoulder of the Dan Ryan Expressway near the Stevenson so guards could bring the brawl under control.

"The bus [was] coming back from the Markham courthouse. There was a brief scuffle. About 10 inmates were involved. One suffered a very minor injury - scratches."

Breit says the jail bus had a large escort back to the Cook County Jail near 26th and California: a lot of Chicago Police cars and Illinois State Police.

This all happened about 5:30 p.m., Breit says.
