HARVEY, Ill. (CBS) -- Hundreds of people filled a church in Harvey for the funeral of former Simeon High School all-state receiver Demarius Reed, who was gunned down last week in a robbery at Eastern Michigan University.

Demarius Reed lay in his casket clad in a white suit. Next to the casket was a four-foot tall photo of Reed carrying a football. A dozen floral arrangements surrounded the casket, two were in the shape of footballs.

He was remembered as a loving son, a prayerful 20 year-old and an honor student who did everything right.

Pastor Janet Goodwin said his burden had to be a mistake.

"He embodied life itself and he so family-oriented, subject to his parents at a young age and even as he prepared to go away for school, he was still subject. This boy was somebody special. He already made it," said Goodwin.

The investigation into the murder continues and just as his brother Damoney played for Simeon High School the night he was killed, Demarius' youngest brother brought his pads and uniform to play for the Harvey Colts later in the evening.
