CHICAGO (CBS) -- A brazen but hapless burglar met his match when he tried to steal an iPad from a restaurant on Chicago's North Side.

Surveillance video shows the man smashing the window and entering the Pie Hole Pizza Joint, 3477 N. Broadway, Saturday morning.

He then tried to take the iPad, but it was secured with a cable.

Despite his best efforts, it wouldn't budge.

The Lakeview pizza shop posted the surveillance video on You Tube.

On its Facebook page, the pizzeria reported that iPad survived the attempted abduction.

The restaurant is well covered by eight surveillance cameras.

Two of the cameras caught images of the thief on a busy street Saturday morning.

The video shows the suspect looking into the pizza parlor, leaving and then returning.

He or she used a heavy object to smash the front window, enter the building and yank at the iPad.

"It's cabled in and connected to the table down below," owner Doug Brandt said. "You saw the video, and he tugged and tugged and tugged on it."

Frustrated, the thief gave up and left the restaurant with the iPad still on the counter.

But it cost Brandt $500 to replace the smashed the window.

"For us that's a lot of pizza we have to recoup," he said. "That's the equivalent to sales on a Wednesday or Thursday night."
