Mag Mile Smash-And-Grab Nets Burglars $425K In High-End Watches

(CBS) – Three burglars, including a woman, made off with a half-million dollars' worth of high end-watches earlier this week on the Magnificent Mile.

The target was the Tourbillon store, a luxury watch retailer with stores around the world.

Some of their brand watches cost as much as a new home. In all, the burglars got away with 45 luxury watches, CBS 2's Suzanne Le Mignot reports.

Sources say the burglary happened at 3:22 a.m. Thursday.

The burglars are two men and a woman. All three were dressed in black from head to toe.

The thieves shattered the left front door of the store with a blunt object. It was covered with a black protective coating.

Sources say the burglars pushed the glass onto the floor before entering the store. They went straight to five display cases, shattering them, taking what was inside.

The initial estimate of the timepieces stolen: 40 Omega watches and five Tiffany & Co. timepieces.  The estimated value of all the merchandise was $425,000.

Friday, CBS 2 cameras were able to see three of those display cases, glass free. They were filled with what look like brochures or magazines instead of luxury watches.

The burglars carried out the crime in only 30 seconds. It's believed they all fled in a dark-colored SUV parked right in front of the store. Sources say a surveillance camera captured the smash-and-grab on tape.

Video cameras outside the store are also being reviewed.

No doubt, investigators will be looking at that video to get more clues as to the identities of the burglars. Sources say those who carried out this crime may be part of a ring involved in other high-end retail thefts in the Gold Coast.

Calls to Tourbillon for comment were not returned.
