3 Critically Injured In South Side Crash

CHICAGO (STMW) -- Three men are being treated at area hospitals after a driver who struck two pedestrians with his car in the South Side Burnside neighborhood was then dragged from his car and beaten by an angry crowd.

Police said the man was driving in the 9300 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue about 7:16 p.m. when he struck the two men – one of whom was critically injured.

Paramedics who arrived at the scene had to call police for backup after an angry crowd that gathered at the scene of the accident dragged the driver from his car and beat him, said Chicago Fire Department spokesman Chief Juan Hernandez.

"People got unruly, dragged the driver out of the car and assaulted him," Hernandez said.

One of the men struck in the accident was taken in critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to Fire Media Affairs.

The driver and the other man he injured were both taken in serious-but-stable condition to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County.

Police could not say if any arrests were made as a result of the fracas.
