Indiana City Hopes New Restrictions Will Keep Strip Clubs Away

The former owner of the Factory Gentlemen's Club on Chicago's far South side wants to put a strip club outside the city and Mayor Ron Meer says they're trying to make it so restrictive that he'll go away.

"I know that we cannot totally ban them or eliminate them but we can really restrict them and what happens when you do that is it makes it more appealing for them where it is easier for them," said Meer.

Meer says new rules mean adult businesses can only be located in areas already zoned manufacturing and they're also working on conduct rules that deal with things like operating hours and lighting.

The city hired a firm to study if adult businesses negatively impact communities and Mayor Meer says they do.

"Things such as prostitution, increased drug sales, a lot of nuisance crimes also, like public intoxication," said Meer.
