3 Dead, 4 Wounded In Overnight Shootings

CHICAGO (STMW) -- Three men were killed and at least four other people were wounded -- including a young boy -- in shootings across the city Wednesday evening.

The youngest person wounded was a boy thought to be 5 or 6, who was shot in the shoulder about 5:40 p.m. near 56th and Mozart streets, police said.

He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in serious condition, police said.

Steven Hernandez told the Chicago Sun-Times was inside his home when he heard five shots and ran outside. He saw a gray car with a bullet-ridden back-seat window speed off.

He said the block is no stranger to gunshots.

"I don't feel safe with the gangs over here. This is [Latin] Kings area," said Hernandez, 24.

In a separate shooting, two men were killed and three others were hurt in a shooting in the West Englewood neighborhood on the South Side.

The four men were sitting in a vehicle in the 1400 block of West 73rd Place when two gunmen opened fire on them about 6:20 p.m., police said. A 28-year-old man was dead on the scene.

Another man, also 28, was shot in the back and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he later died, police said.

DeMarco Powell, 28, of the 7300 block of South Laflin Street, was dead at the scene, authorities said.

Steven Marshall, also 28, of the 1400 block of West 74th Street, was shot in the back and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn where he died less than an hour later, police said.

Two 27-year-old men in the vehicle were also wounded, police said. One man was shot in the buttocks and the other was shot in the left shoulder. Both were hospitalized in "stable" condition.

A fifth person later told police he was hurt by flying glass from the attack, police said.

The gunmen fled on foot and are not in custody Wednesday night, police said..

Another man was killed in a separate shooting about 4:30 p.m., in the South Side Auburn Gresham neighborhood.

Phillip Curtis, 21, was shot in the neck, arm and abdomen in the 8700 block of South Loomis Street, authorities said. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn where he died at 5:25 p.m., authorities said.

The most recent nonfatal shooting happened about 5:30 p.m. in the 600 block of North Avers Avenue, in the Humboldt Park neighborhood, police said.

A man was shot in the buttocks and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in stable condition, police said.
