Texas Man Says He Was Shot While Driving In Gold Coast, Authorities Have Doubts

CHICAGO (CBS) --Chicago authorities have their doubts about the story told by a 48-year-old Texas man who says he was shot late last night while driving in the Gold Coast.

For one thing, authorities say - they couldn't find the crime scene.

Police say the man told them he was near Superior and Michigan Avenue in a rented vehicle when his rear window was shot out.

Authorities say the window was broken - but they cannot find any glass where the man says it happened. Or shell casings.

Or witnesses.

The man told police he didn't realize he'd been shot until he was back in his hotel room at the Residence Inn at 201 East Walton Place - after turning the car over to the valet parking attendant.

Instead of calling 911, a police source says, the man called hotel security.

The police source says authorities believe whatever happened might have been drug-related - and that the man has a history of drug arrests in Texas.

And had been drinking last night.

They say he'd been here for a couple of weeks working as a contractor.

The man is recovering from being shot through the back - and police say the bullet went into his chest.
