Candidates Begin Filing Nomination Petitions For 2014 Primaries

CHICAGO (CBS) -- The weather's cold, but the political season is starting to heat up. Monday is the first day candidates can file nomination petitions for the upcoming elections.

Candidates lined up at the Cook County Administration way before the sun came up. They're vying for the top ballot spots for the March 18 primaries.

They say it's worth the wait, even in the cold.

"We will see what I can do. I am just trying to file my papers today and from there we will see if I get elected or not," said Michael Urban.

"It is tradition for me. We try to be first on the ballot and they changed the law and so now if you are here before 9 and it is more than one candidate it is a lottery but we are hoping that my opponent is still at home in the bed," said Cook County Commissioner Deborah Sims.

Being first on the ballot doesn't guarantee a win, but it can attract undecided voters.
