Pizza A Popular Pick On Thanksgiving Eve

(CBS) -- Well we all know turkey is the most popular dish for Thanksgiving, but what are Chicagoans eating in record numbers Wednesday night? Believe it or not it's pizza.

More pizzas are sold on the night before Thanksgiving than any other night of the year. Aurelio's in Homewood can vouch for that.

Aurelio's expects to sell over a thousand pies, and that is not counting the pizzas will be delivered. In the past decade or so many families have begun the tradition: Pizza on Thanksgiving eve.

Rhonda Kearney got in on the ground floor.

"We started about ten years ago coming the night before thanksgiving," said Kearney.

"Moms don't want to cook. I don't blame them. I'm here serving food. It's a treat for moms," said Tina Boldt, Aurelio's manager.

And it's not just moms who appreciate the break.

"Tomorrow I'll be outside manning the grill for cooking our turkey," said Paul Eisenberg.

Maybe next year turkey pizza?

"We thought about doing different things. Maybe a gravy base and turkey on it, then do like a stuffing crumbled on it?" said Aurelio's executive Kirk Mauriell.

Maybe, maybe not.

"I can't imagine it would be all that great and I'm gonna be eating a lot of turkey tomorrow," said Eisenberg.

How big a deal is this? The U.S. pizza industry says this night is bigger than Super Bowl Sunday.
