CHICAGO (CBS) — It might not be the first food you think about when you’re listing Chicago’s best eats, but the Windy City boasts four of the top 25 doughnuts in a ranking from one of the nation’s leading culinary publications.
The Daily Meal ranked the plain glazed doughnut at The Doughnut Vault in the River North neighborhood as the best doughnut in the country.
Three other doughnut shops in Chicago made the top 25, including the chocolate glazed from Do-Rite Donuts & Coffee at 50 W. Randolph St.; the plain glazed from Dat Donut at 8249 S. Cottage Grove Av.; and the chocolate cake from Dinkel’s Bakery at 3329 N. Lincoln Av.
No other city had more than two doughnuts on the list.
Norm Dinkel, whose grandfather founded Dinkel’s Bakery said their chocolate cake doughnut is the bakery’s top seller, and is still hand-dipped.
In searching for the nation’s top doughnuts, The Daily Meal said, “these donuts need to be groan-inducingly good: fresh, soft, gooey, perfectly proportioned, and intended to leave you wanting just one more bite.”
