Man Charged With Sexually Assaulting Woman He Met Online

(STMW) -- A Chicago man is being held on a $250,000 bond after being charged with driving an 18-year-old woman he met on social media to a south suburban forest preserve and raping her at gunpoint.

Karon Godbold, 35, is charged with sexual assault and weapons violations, according to a statement from the Cook County Sheriff's office.

The victim told police that about 1 p.m. Monday, a man she had met on social media drove her to the Sauk Trail Woods Forest Preserve in Chicago Heights. He then put a gun to her head and forced her to have sex with him, according to the statement.

The victim said she met her attacker on the social media site Tagged, and knew him as "Maurice Jones." But following a tip, police arrested Godbold on Tuesday in the 1200 block of Division Street in Chicago Heights.

He was identified as "Maurice Jones" and was still carrying the gun when he was arrested, according to the sheriff's office. He is charged with one count each of aggravated criminal sexual assault, being an armed habitual criminal, and possession of a weapon by a felon.

He appeared Wednesday at the Markham Courthouse and was ordered held on $250,000. A preliminary hearing is set for Dec. 23 in Markham.
