Bicyclist Killed On West Side

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A man was struck and killed while riding his bicycle late Friday night in the West Side Lawndale neighborhood.

Hector Avalos, 28, was traveling in the 2500 block of West Ogden Avenue about 11:50 p.m. when a van hit him, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office and police News Affairs Officer Janel Sedevic.

Avalos, of the 1800 block of West Cermak Road, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:38 a.m. Saturday, according to the medical examiner's office.

The driver of the vehicle stayed on the scene after the accident and was arrested, Sedevic said. Charges against him are pending.

Alcohol may have been a factor, Sedevic said. The police Major Accidents Investigation Unit is investigating.
