CHICAGO (CBS) – Mayor Emanuel is signaling that he’s ready for a fight with City Council critics who have stalled a measure he wants to limit the use of electronic cigarettes in Chicago.
WBBM Political Editor Craig Dellimore reports Mayor Emanuel was receiving and award from a California-based group for championing a ban on the sale of menthol cigarettes to minors, but his mind was on an ordinance that would treat e-cigarettes the same as other tobacco products.
Under the ordinance, you couldn’t some them in offices, restaurants or sell them to kids.
But some aldermen blocked the measure saying it is unclear whether e-cigarettes are harmful. The Mayor bristled.
“This vote is about who is going to stand up for kids. Who is not going to be lured by the money? Who is not going to be lured by this research that is going to say oh, we don’t know. Well the FDA has been asking for information. Put it out,” said Emanuel.
The Mayor says some aldermen were bowing to big tobacco lobbyists.
