Good Samaritan Killed Hours After Wedding

(CBS) -- A Crown Point man has been killed - acting as a good Samaritan - just hours after his own wedding.

The Lake County Sheriff's office says a woman driving in Crown Point around midnight slid off the road and her car ended up in a ditch near 109th and Lane Street.

49-year-old William Riley Knight of Crown Point was driving along with his new bride.

And Lake County Sheriff's Office Spokeswoman Patti Van Til says Knight stopped.

Good Samaritan Killed Hours After Wedding

"He was on his way home from his wedding reception when he stopped to provide assistance to this female who was walking up the embankment after her car had slid off the road."

Van Til says Knight and the woman whose car was stranded were both hit by another car - and they were killed.

The woman was identified as 42-year-old Linda Darlington of Crown Point.

Knight is survived by his wife - the woman he had just married.

His ex-wife tells WBBM that Knight had two biological children and two stepchildren.

She says Knight had been in the U.S. Army Rangers before he retired in the mid-'90s.

She says Knight was a hunter and had been an actor in community theatre.

The Lake County Coroner's office says both Knight and Darlington died of blunt force trauma.
