Police: Alcohol A Factor In Fatal Gage Park Crash

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Charges are pending against a driver involved in a fatal crash early Saturday in the South Side Gage Park neighborhood.

Two males were in a vehicle traveling south on Western Avenue near 50th Street when the vehicle struck a tree just before 2 a.m., authorities said.

When emergency crews arrived at the scene, the passenger was found unresponsive, police said.

The passenger, 19-year-old Tashon Krzysiek, was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County where he was pronounced dead less than an hour later, according to the medical examiner's office.

An autopsy Sunday found Krzyiek, of the 3100 block of West Madison Street, died of multiple injuries from the crash. His death was ruled an accident, the medical examiner's office said.

The driver of the vehicle, also a male, was hospitalized in serious condition after the accident and remains in police custody, police said. Charges against him are still pending as of Monday morning.

Alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the crash, police said.
