Parents Of Murdered Teen Hold Toy Drive To Honor Her Memory

CHICAGO (CBS) -- The parents of a murdered Chicago teenager are helping children who have lost siblings to violence, reports WBBM's Mike Krauser.

The parents of 15-year-old murder victim Hadiya Pendleton say they were overwhelmed by the outpouring of support for a toy drive they hosted today for the siblings of murdered children.

Cleopatra Pendelton stood in the Harold Washington cultural center, at 47th and King Pendleton said her daughter was all about helping others and giving back and so they were honoring her with the toy drive.

Pendleton says her daughter liked to give back and so they are honoring her with the toy drive.

"A big subset of the recipients are surviving siblings of murdered children," said Pendleton.

She says her daughter loved Christmas and last year came up with the idea to help a family in need. Now her parents are helping many and Pendleton says doing things like this helps them to deal with the still very painful loss.

"When I do things like this and we are helping other people, it helps us, and that's the reason I do it."
