Mixed Bag Of Weather Expected Today Through Chicago Region

(STMW) -- A mixed bag of precipitation is expected to hit the Chicago area Sunday, making some roads hazardous for holiday travelers.

The National Weather Service warns that a wintry mix will move northeast through Illinois Sunday morning, bringing snow, sleet and freezing rain.

A winter storm warning is in effect until 10 a.m. for McHenry and DeKalb counties, and a winter weather advisory is in effect until 10 a.m. for Lake and Kane counties.

The McHenry County Sheriff's office tells WBBM Newsradio roads are snowy with about 2 to 3 inches on the ground by 8 a.m.

One issue -- especially west of Route 47 -- is drifting snow.

There were a few minor accidents, says McHenry County Undersheriff Andrew Zinke, and he says 99 percent of those accidents are caused by people driving too fast.

Forecasters say snow and ice accumulations could make travel hazardous Sunday, and freezing drizzle is expected to linger throughout the day.

The Illinois Tollway mobilized their full fleet of 182 snowplows Saturday night in response to the icy weather. No major crashes were reported on the expressways overnight, according to Illinois State Police.

As of 7:30 a.m., there were no delays at O'Hare and Midway airports, though there were a few minor cancellations, according to the city's Department of Aviation.

There are more chances for snow Monday and Tuesday, including a 50 percent chance of snow on Christmas Day, according to the weather service.
