Non-Emergency Roadwork Suspended During Holidays

(STMW) -- In an effort to reduce traffic throughout the holidays, the Illinois Department of Transportation announced Monday that all non-emergency roadwork will be temporarily suspended and lanes will reopen, where possible, on certain days throughout next few weeks.

All non-emergency road construction will be halted and some lanes will reopen throughout the state at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Christmas Eve, until midnight Wednesday, Christmas day, according to a release from IDOT.

Also, lanes previously closed for roadwork will open at 3 p.m. Dec. 31 and will not close again until midnight Jan. 1, IDOT said.

"Families traveling throughout Illinois for the holidays will experience an easier commute now that all non-emergency roadwork will be suspended," Illinois Transportation Secretary Ann L. Schneider said in the release.

Some construction zones across Illinois will still have lane closures in effect, depending on the project, according to IDOT.
