2 Dead, 20 Wounded In Weekend Shootings

CHICAGO (STMW) -- Two men are dead and at least 20 other people have been wounded in shootings across Chicago since Friday evening, police said.

The most recent fatal shooting happened about 2 a.m. Monday at a stoplight in the 1300 block of West Cermak Road.

Four men had left a West Side bar after getting into a verbal altercation with another group of men, and were in a car when an SUV pulled up and fired shots into their vehicle, police said.

A 22-year-old man in the car was shot in the head and taken to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, where he later died, according to police. The Cook County Medical Examiner's office confirmed the man's death, but his name was not released as of early Monday morning.

A 21-year-old in the vehicle was also shot in the head and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in "stable" condition.

Police believe the shooting may have been gang-related.

Early Saturday, a man was shot and killed less than a block from his home in the Bronzeville neighborhood on the South Side.

Craig Williams, 23, was walking on the sidewalk in the 4500 block of South Indiana Avenue about 4:10 a.m. when two males got out of a dark-colored sedan and fired shots at him, police and the medical examiner's office said.

He ran to a nearby vacant lot, where he collapsed, police said. He suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the body.

Williams, of a nearby address in the 4500 block of South Indiana, was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:55 a.m., the medical examiner's office said.

Twenty other people have been shot across the city since Friday evening.

Most recently, a 35-year-old man was standing in an alley about 1:50 a.m. Monday in the 6900 block of North Sheridan Road in Rogers Park, police said. Two unknown men got out of a dark-colored vehicle and approached, demanded money and showed gun. When the 35-year-old refused, one of the suspects shot him in the leg before the two fled in their vehicle westbound on Lunt Avenue, police said.

He was taken to Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston in "stable" condition, police said.

Just after midnight Monday, a 20-year-old man was sitting in the driver's seat of a parked car in the 11300 block of South Carpenter Road when a person got out of another car nearby, walked up and opened fire, police said. The man was shot in the elbow and armpit, and taken to Roseland Community Hospital in "stable" condition, police said.

About 9:35 p.m. Sunday, a 22-year-old man was hurt in a drive-by shooting in the South Lawndale neighborhood on the West Side. The man was standing on the sidewalk in the 2400 block of South Harding Avenue when a dark-colored van drove by and one of its occupants fired at him. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was listed in "stable" condition, police said.

About 8:20 p.m. Sunday, a 20-year-old man was shot while sitting in a vehicle in the South Side Brighton Park neighborhood. The man was sitting in the parked vehicle near South Western Avenue and West 47th Place when a dark-colored vehicle approached and someone inside fired shots, striking him in the leg, police said. The man took himself to Holy Cross Hospital.

A few hours earlier, a 19-year-old man was grazed by a bullet in the West Side Austin neighborhood. The man was shot about 6:15 p.m. in the 1500 block of North Leclaire Avenue, police said. Paramedics treated him at the scene for a graze wound to the cheek, police said.

About an hour earlier, a man was shot in the finger in the South Side Englewood neighborhood. The shooting occurred about 5:11 p.m. in the 6000 block of South Carpenter Street, police said. He was taken to Saint Bernard Hospital and Health Care Center in good condition.

A man was shot multiple times after being robbed of his coat shortly before 4 p.m. in the Roseland neighborhood on the South Side. The 30-year-old man was standing outside in the 0-100 block of East 101st Place shortly before 4 p.m. when an armed male approached him and demanded his coat, police said.

The man handed over his coat, at which point the gunman shot him in the leg, groin and arm before fleeing in a light-colored SUV, police said. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was listed in "stable" condition, police said.

In the early morning hours, a man, believed to be in his 30s, was shot about 2 a.m. Sunday in the 11300 block of South Harvard Avenue, police said. He was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County in "stable" condition.

An hour earlier, a 42-year-old was walking on the sidewalk in the 1100 block of South Western Avenue when an unknown male walked up and shot him in the left cheek and left arm, police said. The shooting may have been gang-related. The man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in "stable" condition, police said.

About 6:45 p.m. Saturday, an 18-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy were walking on the sidewalk in the 10400 block of South Wallace Street when they heard shots and realized they'd been hit, police said. The 17-year-old was shot in the left ankle, while the 18-year-old suffered a graze wound to his calf, police said. Both were taken to Roseland Community Hospital in good condition.

Earlier Saturday morning, a 23-year-old man was standing on the sidewalk about 4:30 a.m. in the 5700 block of South Laflin Street when he heard shots and felt pain, police said. He suffered a gunshot wound to the buttocks and was taken in serious condition to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County.

About an hour earlier in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood, a man, 20, was shot in the groin area while he was urinating in a gangway about 3:20 a.m. in the 6400 block of South Homan Avenue, police said. He was taken in serious condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

At 2:50 a.m., a 25-year-old man was injured in a Brighton Park neighborhood shooting in the 4200 block of South Western Avenue, police said. He suffered a gunshot wound to the right shoulder and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was listed in "stable" condition.

In the South Lawndale neighborhood, a woman, 23, was in a car about 1:10 a.m. in the 3100 block of South California Avenue, when an unknown vehicle pulled up alongside her and someone inside fired shots, police said. She walked into Saint Anthony Hospital with a gunshot wound to the arm and was listed in good condition.

Early Friday evening, an elderly man was shot during a robbery in the Gold Coast, less than a block away from the home of Chicago Archbishop Francis George. The 70-year-old man was approached by an unknown male suspect and robbed of his cell phone about 7:30 p.m. in the 1500 block of North Astor Street, police said. He was shot in the foot and taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in "stable" condition.

A few minutes earlier, a woman was shot while riding in a car in the Uptown neighborhood. The 25-year-old woman was a passenger in a vehicle in the 1000 block of West Wilson Avenue when someone in another vehicle opened fire, police said. She suffered a graze wound to the face and was taken in good condition to Weiss Memorial Hospital.

Police said the shooting is thought to be gang-related.

The first shooting of the weekend occurred about 7 p.m. in the South Shore neighborhood.

A 25-year-old woman and a man, 23, got in to a physical fight with another male about 7 p.m. when he shot the other two in the 2600 block of East 76th Street, police said. The woman was hit in her left arm, and the man was struck in his right arm.

The shooter then started beating the man with an object that a second, female suspect handed to him, police said. The woman was taken to Jackson Park Hospital and Medical Center, while the man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, police said. Both were listed in "stable" condition.

The male and female suspects, whose ages were not immediately known, were taken in to custody, police said. Charges are pending against them.

Area detectives are investigating each of the shootings.
