Palos Park's Top Cop Offers To Be Designated Driver

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A south suburban police chief wants residents to get home safely this New Year's Eve, and he's even giving out his own cellphone for those who might need a ride home after a night of partying.

Palos Park police chief Joe Miller said he's beefed up his staff for New Year's Eve to make sure everybody has a safe celebration.

Miller is even giving out his own number for anybody who may need some help getting home.

"The concept is to encourage and take advantage of it," Miller said. "If someone is impaired and needs a ride, we would much rather have them call us than get behind the wheel and get into an accident."

Palos Park is also offering peace of mind to families who are leaving underage people at home.

The department will send officers on patrol to check on the homes between 7 p.m. and 4 a.m.
